On Friday, May 6th, 2011 Generación Latina, Inc. hosted our first big event since becoming an official non-for-profit organization. This event, held at Campbell High School in Cobb county, was appropriately called “Noche de Sueños” and featured community, food, fun and, of course, highlighted the various talents of Latino youth from the surrounding area. For many of these teens, this was the first time, ever, that adults had taken the time to recognize and honor who they are, where they come from, and all that they have to offer. With my bowl of arroz con dulce it was hard not to be inspired while looking out over the crowd of teens as they stared in awe as the coach of the Atlanta Silverbacks thanked them for the honor of being present at their event. It was a night I know that everyone involved with GLINC will never forget and I can assure you, it was a few hours that will forever be engraved in the minds of the Latino youth that were present. It was the night of dreams and the night that someone finally took the time to recognize all the wonderful things that Latino youth can do.
In order for us to keep sending these positive messages for Latino youth, we will need the support of others who want to help us inspire the lives of Latino teens. What does this support look like? It looks like many different things, all with the same purpose- to support the futures of our Latino youth. It looks like packs of pens and paper and art supplies. It looks like donations of snacks for our afterschool programs or like volunteering your talents or skills for GLINC’s special events. It looks like standing up for Latino youth all the time, even when it’s uncomfortable or difficult to do in the face of prejudice and injustice. It looks like YOU. Please consider joining forces with GLINC today and changing the lives of Latino youth in your community. Let’s collectively send the message that “Yes, you CAN do what you put your mind to because you are wonderful, talented and valued in your community and society.”
¡Sí, se puede!,
